Los Angeles, California isn’t my hometown, but I’ve been exploring the city of angels for 9 years. I moved here right after college and take great pride in being the designated tour guide for friends and family.  

In this post, I share the best places to draw including iconic landmarks, beaches, hikes, attractions, and hidden gems in and around Los Angeles County (This includes areas such as Santa Monica, Pasadena, Hollywood, and other popular surrounding cities).

The world-renowned Hollywood sign started as a temporary advertisement for real estate in the Hollywood Hills and initially read “Hollywoodland”. Featured in countless movies, the iconic Hollywood sign should be at the top of your list to visit.

2. Griffith Observatory

Griffith Observatory is a great place to see panoramic views of Los Angeles including the Hollywood sign. Overlooking the entire city, it’s the perfect place for stargazing, a picnic, or a painting date. Be sure to explore the live shows, telescopes, and exhibits.

3. Rodeo Drive

Home to the top designer labels and luxurious boutiques, Rodeo Drive is synonymous with celebrity and big spending. This is a great area to draw tourists, lavish cars, and the iconic Beverly Hills fountain.

Wayfarer’s Chapel is a church made out of glass, wood, and stone to form a pinnacle around a grove of redwood trees. This chapel is a sunny delight nestled off the coast of Palos Verdes and has been home to hundreds of breathtaking weddings.

Located on Hollywood Blvd, the Pantages Theatre has been a grand stage for entertainment and Broadway tours. It’s an art deco gem designed by Marcus Priteca.

Also known as the “Pink Palace”, this 5-star lavish hotel is set on 12 perfectly landscaped acres. It’s one of the most internationally recognized hotels closely associated with Hollywood celebrities. It has luxuriously accommodated icons like Marilyn Monroe and Elizabeth Taylor.

Union Station is the largest railroad terminal in the Western United States. Designed by John and Donald Parkison, this station is a blend of Spanish Colonial and Mission Revival architecture. You’ll see art deco features, hand-painted tiles, and 40-foot arched windows.

17. Wilshire Temple

Home to the first Jewish congregation in Los Angeles, the Wilshire Temple, is a grand synagogue topped with a monumental Byzantine dome. Completed in 1929 by Abram M. Edelman, this sanctuary is among the most distinguished religious constructs in Los Angeles.

18. TCL Chinese Theatre

The TCL Chinese Theater holds the largest IMAX theater in the world and the third-largest movie screen in the United States. It’s one of the world’s most famous cinemas located on Hollywood Boulevard.

The Adamson House is a California Historic Landmark located off of the Pacific Coast Highway. The house is lined with Malibu tile and contains preserved furnishings, hand-painted murals, and custom ironwork. The home is well-maintained and rests in its original glory.

20. Hale House

Hale House is a Victorian-style mansion built in 1887 located in the Heritage Square Museum. This area is a community of Victorian-era buildings saved from demolition and moved to their present location. It’s been said the Hale House is haunted and spirits still reside in the historical landmark.

21. Spadena House

Also known as the witch’s house, Spadena house is a storybook home in Beverly Hills. This is a private residence today, however, it was built for a silent film in 1921. If you’re a fan of fairytales, take a stroll and enjoy the whimsical framework.

22. Stimson House

Designed by Carroll H. Brown, this three-story Romanesque mansion was constructed in 1891. It’s currently the only mansion remaining from the street once called “Millionaire’s Row”. The house has been occupied by a brewer, a fraternity, and the Sisters of St. Joseph. It’s definitely a site to see, however, there are no private tours.

23. Hollyhock House

Frank Lloyd Wright’s Hollyhock House is the only Los Angeles site to join the UNESCO World Heritage Sites list. This home was designed for Aline Barnsdall and inspired by her favorite flower. Unfortunately, with seventeen rooms and seven bathrooms, Barnsdall didn’t approve and ended up donating the property to the city of Los Angeles. If you love cubism and modernist details, you’ll love this home.

24. Stahl House

Designed by Pierre Koenig in 1959, this cliffside home overlooks the Hollywood hills. Featured in a dozen movies and TV shows, this glass house is a true testament to modern architecture.

Built in 1949 in the Pacific Palisades, this Mid-century modern home sits like a Mondrian painting overlooking the ocean. Charles and Ray Eames built a revolutionary home. If you’re an architecture enthusiast, you’ll love the guided tour.

Designed by John Lautner in 1960, the Chemosphere House is a historical landmark hovering over the Hollywood Hills. This is a private residence, but it is guaranteed to make you do a double-take.

32. BAPS Shri Swaminarayan Mandir

BAPS Shri Swaminarayan Mandir is a Hindu temple right outside Los Angeles in Chino Hills. It’s the largest Hindu temple in the United States. I saw this temple driving on the highway and I couldn’t take my eyes off of it. You should definitely add this as one of your top sketching spots.

Grand Central Market is filled with a variety of food vendors including Mexican, Mediterranean, Japanese, Thai, and Italian dishes to name a few. It’s a foodie paradise located in DTLA.

Sandstone Peak is the highest peak in the Santa Monica Mountains standing at 3,111 feet. This hike is considered moderately challenging, but the views are totally worth it. You’ll find amazing rock formations and arguably some of the best sunsets.

This 1.4-mile loop has been featured in the opening to “The Andy Griffith Show” and Nickelodeon’s “Salute Your Shorts. It’s an easy trail where you’ll see turtles, ducks, and fish nestled around the reservoir.

Will Rogers State Historic Park was home to one of the highest paid actors in Hollywood, Will Rogers. Rogers developed a ranch on approximately 350+ acres overlooking the ocean. His home is still on the property and preserved in its original condition. There’s several hiking trails, horse riding trails, a polo field,and even a golf course.

Solstice Canyon Loop is a 3-mile trail near Malibu. There’s a perennial waterfall next to the remains of the Roberts Ranch House designed by revolutionary architect Paul Revere Williams. This is a great hike for bird watching and landscape painting.

Located in Palos Verdes, the hike to Abalone Cove leads to intricately carved sea caves and flourishing tide pools. This area is nestled in a residential area making it one of the quietest beaches in Southern California

Los Angeles is HUGE and has a significant amount of traffic at all times of the day. It’s imperative that you plan your routes accordingly. 

I suggest staying at the accommodations below on the west side near Santa Monica. They’re airport adjacent, near tons of restaurants + shops, and most importantly, near the beach.
